LYMPHATIC CARE IN AUSTIN

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), often referred to as lymphatic drainage massage, is a gentle, hands-on approach that supports the movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. Lymphatic work is at the heart of what we do at Align Massage + Lymphatics.

Our approach is rooted in extensive training, curiosity, and respect for the interconnected nature of the body. Rather than forcing change, we listen with our hands and let the physiology in front of us help guide the work. The result is thoughtful, individualized care designed to support not just how you feel on the table, but how you understand and care for your body beyond it.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

The lymphatic system is an essential part of the body's fluid balance and immune function. It collects and transports excess fluid, proteins, cellular debris, and metabolic waste from the tissues, helping maintain the environment surrounding our cells.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses gentle, rhythmic, hands-on techniques to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid. Unlike traditional massage, lymphatic work doesn't rely on deep pressure to be effective. Many of the lymphatic structures we can influence manually sit close to the surface, making thoughtful, precise touch an important part of the work.

Our therapists have extensive training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, including the Vodder Method. That training provides an important foundation, but we also rely on anatomical knowledge, palpation, observation, curiosity, and the body's response to guide our work.

Gentle Is Powerful

Lymphatic work doesn't have to hurt to work.

More pressure isn't always better. Many of the lymphatic structures we can influence manually sit close to the surface, which means effective lymphatic work can feel surprisingly light, slow, and subtle.

At Align, we don't believe in forcing change. We listen with our hands, work with the physiology in front of us, and allow the body to help guide the pace of the session. Thoughtful, responsive care can be powerful without being aggressive.

Care Beyond The Table

Your body comes with you when you leave the table. We think your care should, too.

At your first visit, you’ll receive a swag bag with educational materials, a fascia release tool, stickers, and a hydration packet. We’ll also share simple, sustainable "lymph snacks”:  small practices rooted in science, guided by soul, and easy to weave into your day-to-day life.

Our goal is for you to need us less.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What does lymphatic drainage feel like? The spirit of lymphatic work is slow, rhythmic, pumping. Akin to floating underwater, it’s deeply calming for the nervous system. Lymphatic drainage consists of precise skin techniques that move along the body’s surface and into deeper drainage reservoirs of the body.

Does lymphatic drainage hurt? Pain is rarely reported during an MLD treatment. However, each experience is real and important. Your comfort is our top priority, so how your body responds guides the session.

How is lymphatic drainage different from traditional massage? Traditional massage often focuses on alleviating tension within the musculoskeletal system, which lies many layers beneath the skin’s surface. Overall, traditional massage involves more speed, pressure, and depth. Lymphatic drainage targets the outermost layers of the body, yet impacts all tissue types and all systems with moderately lighter pressure. Overall, lymphatic drainage facilitates the fluid movement between the individual cells of the body.

How often should I receive lymphatic care? There’s no magical cadence that’s right everyone. Frequency depends on why you’re seeking treatment and what your overall goals are; your therapist can help you decide what feels appropriate.

What should I expect after a lymphatic session? Everyone responds differently. You may notice changes in how your body feels, moves, or processes fluid after a session. For a deeper look, read our “4 Things to Expect After Your First Lymphatic Drainage Session” blog article.

Can I receive lymphatic drainage before or after surgery? Yes, lymphatic support may be appropriate both before and after certain procedures, but timing and approach matter. Visit our Pre/Post Operative services page for more details.

Is lymphatic drainage appropriate for everyone? Not always. Certain medical conditions or circumstances may require additional consideration or clearance before treatment. This can include conditions that affect how the body manages fluid, such as heart or kidney failure. If you have one of these conditions—or you’re simply unsure whether lymphatic care is appropriate for you—please contact us before booking. We’re happy to help you determine the best next step.
